Reading a category before designing for it
Every category has already decided what its creative looks like. The useful question is which of those decisions are load-bearing.

Open any category and the convergence is obvious within a screen. The same crops, the same backgrounds, the same badge in the same corner. It is tempting to read that as laziness and design straight against it.
Sometimes that is right. Often the convention is carrying information, and breaking it costs more than the distinctiveness it buys. The work is telling those two apart before the first frame is built.
What is worth cataloguing
- 01What every listing does. This is the category's grammar, and breaking it reads as an error.
- 02What most do but not all. This is convention, and it is negotiable.
- 03What one does alone. Either an experiment or a mistake, and it is worth knowing which.
- 04What nobody does. The interesting column, and usually the shortest.

From reading to a brief
A category read is only useful if it narrows something. If it ends in a document that describes the landscape without ruling anything out, it was an exercise rather than research.
The output of looking at fifty listings should be a shorter list of things you are allowed to do, not a longer list of things you could.
